Should you list on an NDIS directory? An honest guide for providers

Key takeaway: directories, marketplaces and lead services are not the same thing, and the fee model matters far more than the marketing. Work out what you would actually pay before you sign up.

Three models that all say the same thing

When you start looking at where to list your service, you will notice most platforms promise the same result, which is more participants. But underneath the marketing they work in very different ways. A directory lists your service and lets participants contact you directly, so you are found and then you take it from there. A marketplace runs the bookings and payments through the platform and takes a percentage of what you earn. A lead or matching service sells you referred clients, so you pay for each participant sent your way. All three can help you get found. They just charge for it in completely different ways, so it pays to know which one you are actually signing up to.

The real question is the fee model

Once you look past the marketing, the thing that matters most is how you pay. A flat listing fee is predictable. You know what it costs each month whether you take on one participant or ten. A percentage of every invoice scales with your success, which sounds fair until you realise it never stops, and the better you do the more you hand over for the life of the relationship. Per lead fees can add up fast, because you often pay for a lead whether or not it turns into a client, and a run of leads that do not convert can get expensive quickly. The honest way to compare them is to work out what you would actually pay at your real volume, not the headline price on the pricing page.

What a good listing needs to do for you

A listing earns its keep when it does three simple things. First, it puts you in front of people who are searching your suburb and your service, because that is where the participants who need you right now are looking. Second, it lets them see that you are actually taking clients, so you are not fielding enquiries you cannot help with or missing the ones you can. Third, it lets them contact you directly, so the relationship is yours from the first message and stays that way. If a platform gets in the way of any of those three, it is working for itself more than it is working for you.

Questions to ask before you list

Before you sign up to anything, get straight answers to a short list of questions. What is the total cost at my volume, not the starting price? Do you take a cut of my invoices? Do you charge me per lead, and do I pay whether or not the lead converts? Do participants see my real availability, or will I keep getting enquiries when I am full? And do I keep the client relationship, or does it belong to the platform? If a platform is slow or vague on any of these, treat that as an answer in itself.

When a directory is worth it

A flat listing is often the cheapest growth there is, but only at the right time. If you have capacity now and you want to be found without chasing every enquiry yourself, a predictable monthly listing that sends participants straight to you is hard to beat on value. If you have no capacity, there is no rush. Wait until you are ready to take people on, then list, so the enquiries arrive when you can actually help. Being honest with yourself about your capacity is the difference between a listing that pays for itself and one that just sits there.

How Supportd is built

For the record, here is how we do it, so you can weigh it against the models above. Supportd is a flat monthly listing. There is no commission and no per lead fee, so you keep 100 percent of every job you take. Participants contact you directly and the relationship is yours. Your listing shows your availability, so the enquiries you get are from people you can actually help. We will also be honest about the trade off. We are early, so we are not going to pretend there is a flood of traffic on day one. Search visibility compounds over months, not overnight, and a flat listing is a bet on that compounding rather than an instant switch. If that fits how you think about growth, it is worth a look.
