What is an unregistered NDIS provider and can I use one?

April 2026·5 min read

Key takeaway: Unregistered does not mean unqualified or unsafe. Over 180,000 NDIS providers in Australia are unregistered. If you are self-managed or plan-managed, you can use them.

The short answer

An unregistered NDIS provider is simply a provider who has not gone through the formal registration process with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. That is it. It does not mean they are not qualified. It does not mean they are not safe. It does not mean they are operating illegally. It just means they have not completed the Commission's registration audit process.

Why so many providers choose not to register

NDIS registration is expensive and time-consuming. The process requires audits, extensive documentation, ongoing reporting obligations and fees that can run into thousands of dollars. For a solo support worker or a small allied health practice, the cost and administrative burden often outweighs the benefit, especially when the majority of participants can already access unregistered providers. Many excellent, highly experienced providers make a deliberate choice to remain unregistered so they can keep their costs down and their focus on delivering support.

Who can access unregistered providers?

This is the key question. Your access to unregistered providers depends on your NDIS funding type. If you are self-managed, you can use any provider including unregistered providers and independent support workers. If you are plan-managed, your plan manager handles the financial side and you can also access unregistered providers. If you are NDIA-managed, the NDIA pays providers directly and you can only use providers who are registered with the Commission. The majority of NDIS participants are either self-managed or plan-managed, which means the majority of participants can access unregistered providers.

Are unregistered providers safe?

This is the most common concern and it is understandable. The NDIS Commission registration process does provide one layer of oversight. But registration is not the only indicator of quality or safety. Many unregistered providers hold NDIS Worker Screening clearances, police checks, Working with Children checks and relevant professional qualifications. On Supportd, every provider can display the verification badges they hold so you can see exactly what checks and credentials each provider has completed. When choosing any provider, registered or not, you should check their verifications, read their profile, speak with them before engaging, and trust your instincts.

How Supportd helps

Most NDIS directories only list registered providers. That means they are showing you roughly 17,000 options out of a market that is closer to 250,000. Supportd lists registered providers, unregistered providers and independent support workers. Every listing shows the provider's registration status clearly, along with any verification badges they hold. You can filter by registration type to find exactly what suits your funding type and preferences.
