Agency managed NDIS funding explained, and which providers you can use

Key takeaway: Agency managed, also called NDIA managed, means the NDIA pays your providers directly from your plan, and you can only use providers who are registered with the NDIS.

What agency managed means

Agency managed funding, also called NDIA managed, is where the NDIA looks after the money side of your plan for you. When a provider delivers a support, they claim the cost straight from the NDIA, and the NDIA pays them directly from your plan budget. You do not receive invoices, you do not pay anyone yourself, and you do not have to keep records of every claim. For a lot of participants this is the simplest option to live with, because the admin is handled for you and there is nothing to reconcile at the end of the month.

The one real limit: registered providers only

There is one important trade off to understand. Under agency management you can only use providers who are registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. That is because the NDIA can only pay providers who are set up in its system, and registration is what puts them there. Registered providers are a smaller share of the overall market, so your pool of options is narrower than it would be under the other management types. It does not mean the choice is small, but it does mean some independent workers and unregistered providers will be off limits while your plan stays agency managed.

How it compares to plan and self managed

The difference really comes down to choice versus simplicity. If you are plan managed, a plan manager pays your providers for you and you can use registered providers, unregistered providers and independent support workers. If you are self managed, you handle the payments yourself and you also have that full range of providers to choose from. Both of those open up far more of the market. Agency managed goes the other way. You give up some of that choice in exchange for the NDIA handling the money and keeping things simple. Neither approach is better in the abstract. It depends on how much choice you want and how much admin you are comfortable taking on.

Can you change how your plan is managed

Your management type is not fixed forever. If you decide you want more provider choice, you can raise it with the NDIA and ask to change how your plan is managed, usually at a plan review or a reassessment. It is worth talking it through with your support coordinator or local area coordinator if you have one, since they can help you explain why the change suits you. This is not something to overstate. A change is a conversation and a decision made with the NDIA, not something that happens automatically, but it is a normal thing to ask for when your needs change.

Finding registered providers taking clients

Since your pool under agency management is registered providers, the practical task is to find registered providers who are actually taking on new participants. Being registered does not tell you whether a provider has room for you right now, so it helps to do two things at once. Filter for providers who are registered with the Commission, so you only see options you can actually use, and then check who is genuinely available rather than ringing around a long list. That combination saves you from getting attached to a provider only to find out they are full or not registered.

How Supportd helps

Supportd is built to make that search straightforward. You can filter to registered providers so every result is one your agency managed plan can use, see who has real availability rather than guessing, and contact providers directly to start the conversation. It is free for participants and we do not take a commission, so what you see is simply the providers who suit your funding type and are open to new clients, not whoever paid to be at the top.
