What is Lived Experience?

In plain English

Direct, personal knowledge of disability that comes from living it. Many advocates, peer workers and providers draw on lived experience in their work.

Lived experience is the direct, personal knowledge that comes from living with disability, or from caring for someone who does. It is increasingly valued across the sector, in advocacy, in peer work and in how services are designed. Providers with lived experience often understand the day to day reality in a way that training alone cannot teach. It is a genuine strength worth asking providers about.
