Any action that limits a person’s rights or freedom of movement, used only as a last resort and under strict rules to keep someone safe.
Restrictive practices include things like seclusion, physical or chemical restraint, and restricting access to objects. Under the NDIS they are heavily regulated, must be a last resort, must be part of a behaviour support plan, and must be authorised and reported. The goal is always to reduce and eliminate them over time by using positive behaviour support. If a provider uses one, they have clear legal obligations to report it to the NDIS Commission.
