What the module covers
Quality, safety and you is an interactive online course created with people with disability. It uses real stories to show what good support looks like. It helps you understand:
- How the NDIS works and the role of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission
- Your obligations under the NDIS Code of Conduct, including human rights, respect and risk
- Your role in achieving the vision of the NDIS: choice and control for people with disability
Who has to complete it
The module is mandatory for workers of registered NDIS providers. Completing it is one of the quality indicators auditors check, including in the verification module for lower risk supports, so registered providers keep a record of each worker's certificate.
If you are an independent support worker or work for an unregistered provider, it is not legally required, but the Code of Conduct still applies to you. Many participants, families and plan managers ask to see the certificate before engaging a worker, and it is a quick way to show you understand your obligations.
How to do it
The course is free, online and done at your own pace. You log in through the NDIS Commission's online learning portal, create an account and work through the module. At the end you receive an industry recognised certificate of completion.
Finding and downloading your certificate
To get your certificate again later, log in to the Commission's training portal, select My Certificates, find the module and download it. If an employer wants a more recent date, you can repeat a module and get a certificate with a new completion date.
Other free modules from the Commission
The same portal offers other free training that builds on the orientation module:
- New worker NDIS induction modules: a series of 8 modules for people new to the disability sector, which providers can use for staff induction
- Supporting effective communication: how to be a good communication partner, however a person communicates
- Supporting safe and enjoyable meals: following mealtime plans, spotting swallowing difficulty and reducing choking risk
How it fits with other worker requirements
The orientation module is training, not a background check. Workers in risk assessed roles with registered providers also need an NDIS worker screening clearance, which is a separate application through your state or territory screening unit, and it is valid for 5 years. Unregistered providers are not legally required to use worker screening, but the Commission recommends it, and self managed and plan managed participants can make it a condition of working with them.
