A trained animal, most often a dog, that performs tasks to help a person manage the impact of their disability.
An assistance animal is trained to do specific tasks, such as guiding, alerting, retrieving or providing pressure during distress, that reduce the impact of a disability. It is different from a pet or a general emotional support animal. The NDIS may fund an assistance animal where it is reasonable and necessary and backed by strong evidence that it meets a disability need better than the alternatives. The bar for funding is high and usually needs professional reports.
