NDIS explained

How does NDIS re registration (renewing your registration) work?

Updated 19 October 2026 · Checked against official NDIS and government sources

In plain English

NDIS re registration is renewing your registration with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Registration generally lasts three years. You can start re registration any time in the 6 months before your expiry date, and if you start before it expires your current registration stays valid until the Commission decides. If you miss the date, your registration lapses and you must apply again with another full audit.

When to start

Registered providers are generally registered for three years, and your expiry date is on your certificate of registration. You can begin re registration at any time in the 6 months before that date.

Timing matters. If you start before your expiry date, your current registration remains valid until the Commission makes a decision, even if that takes a while. If you start after it, your registration has lapsed and you have no valid registration while your application is processed.

The steps

Re registration has the same steps as a first application:

  • Confirm you are eligible: an ABN, and evidence you can deliver the classes of supports you are applying for
  • Check your workers, including key personnel, have NDIS Worker Screening clearances
  • Complete a self assessment against the applicable NDIS Practice Standards and answer suitability questions
  • Engage an approved quality auditor and complete your audit
  • The NDIS Commission reviews your application
  • You receive a decision and, if approved, a new certificate of registration

Your audit

The type of audit depends on your registration groups. Higher risk and more complex supports need a certification audit, lower risk supports a verification audit. If you add or remove registration groups, or change how you deliver supports, the type of audit you need can change.

You do not have to use the same approved quality auditor as last time. Get quotes early, because auditors book out and the audit needs to fit inside your timeline.

The new NDIS Commission Portal

Since 12 October 2026, all new re registration applications start in the new NDIS Commission Portal, which you log in to with myID and RAM or PRODA. Your ABN is locked and your previous business details and registration groups load automatically, so you can review and update them.

If you started or submitted a re registration in the existing portal before 12 October, finish it there. Re registration drafts in the existing portal were not removed. Drafts in the new portal are deleted after 30 days if you do not submit them.

SIL and NDIS digital platforms

Since 1 July 2026 you need registration group 0138, assistance with supported independent living, to deliver SIL, and 0137 to provide an NDIS digital platform service. Both groups are available on the application form, so add them at re registration if they apply to you. SIL providers need a certification audit that includes the SIL Practice Standards.

If your registration has lapsed

A registration lapses when it expires or when you are deregistered. You then need to complete a new application and audit. If you still have the same ABN, apply in the new portal. If your business structure changed and you now have a new ABN, it is treated as a brand new application.

While lapsed, you cannot deliver supports that require registration, such as supports for agency managed participants, SIL, SDA, plan management or specialist behaviour support.

Tips

  • Diary your expiry date and a reminder at 6 months and 5 months out
  • Fix any outstanding non conformities from your last audit before the new one
  • Check every key personnel member's worker screening and suitability details are current
  • Email registration@ndiscommission.gov.au for questions about your application's status

Common questions

How long does NDIS registration last?

Registered NDIS providers are generally registered for three years. Your expiry date is on your certificate of registration.

When can I start NDIS re registration?

Any time in the 6 months before your registration expires. Starting before expiry keeps your current registration valid until the Commission decides.

Do I need a new audit to re register?

Yes. Re registration includes an audit against the applicable NDIS Practice Standards, and you can choose a different approved quality auditor.

What happens if my NDIS registration expires?

It lapses. You must complete a new application and audit, and you cannot deliver supports that require registration until you are registered again.

Where do I apply to re register?

In the new NDIS Commission Portal, for applications started from 12 October 2026. Applications started earlier are finished in the existing portal.
