SIL providers and NDIS digital platforms must now be registered
By the Supportd team · Checked against official sources on 14 October 2026
The short answer
Since 1 July 2026 Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers and NDIS digital platforms must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Existing unregistered SIL providers had to apply by 1 October 2026 to keep delivering SIL while their application is assessed.
What changed
SIL and NDIS digital platforms were identified as higher risk. From 1 July 2026 both must be registered and meet the same requirements as other registered providers: independent audits, worker screening, incident management and other conditions of registration. Two new registration groups were added: 0137 for providing an NDIS digital platform service, and 0138 for assistance with supported independent living. SIL providers must also meet new SIL Practice Standards.
What counts as SIL
SIL is a package of home and living support for people with higher support needs who need support at all times, or most of the day. It is not SIL if:
- You only receive a few hours of support a day or a week
- You choose and manage your own support workers, including directing, planning and rostering them
What counts as an NDIS digital platform
An app, website or system whose main purpose is connecting participants with people who provide NDIS supports, where payments for those supports are processed through the platform using NDIS funds from the participant's plan.
A directory where you find a provider and contact them directly, and pay them through your own plan arrangements, does not process NDIS payments, so it is not an NDIS digital platform under this definition. Supportd works this way.
The 1 October 2026 deadline
- Unregistered providers already delivering SIL before 1 July 2026 had to submit a valid application for registration group 0138 before 1 October 2026 to keep delivering SIL while it is assessed
- Providers who did not apply can only claim for SIL delivered up to 30 September 2026
- Plan managers have been told to only pay SIL invoices from providers who are registered or have applied
- If an application is refused, that provider cannot deliver SIL
What about support coordination?
Mandatory registration for support coordination was considered but is paused while broader reform is worked through. See our page on the support coordination changes.
What to do now
- If you live in SIL, ask your provider whether they are registered for 0138 or have applied. It is a fair question and a good provider will answer it straight away.
- Check any provider on the NDIS Commission's Find a registered provider search.
- If your SIL provider did not apply, talk to your support coordinator early about moving to a registered provider.
- On Supportd you can filter search results to providers who list themselves as registered, then confirm their registration on the Commission's search.

Common questions
Do SIL providers have to be registered?
Yes. Since 1 July 2026 SIL providers must be registered with the NDIS Commission. Existing unregistered SIL providers had to apply by 1 October 2026 to keep delivering SIL while their application is assessed.
Is Supportd an NDIS digital platform?
No. Supportd is a directory. Participants contact providers directly and no NDIS payments are processed through Supportd, so it does not meet the definition of an NDIS digital platform.
How do I check if a provider is registered?
Use the NDIS Commission's Find a registered provider search, or ask the provider for their registration details and groups.
