What is Public Guardian?

A state or territory appointed decision maker for someone who cannot make certain decisions and has no suitable private guardian.
When a person cannot make some important decisions for themselves and there is no appropriate family member or friend to appoint, a tribunal may appoint the Public Guardian. Their role is limited to the decisions named in the order, and they must act in the person’s best interests and, wherever possible, according to the person’s will and preferences. Supported decision making is always preferred first, with guardianship a last resort.
